National Conference Registration Opens SOON!
Registration will be open on Wednesday, December 5 for the first ever National Chinese Language Conference to be held on April 17-19, 2008, at Renaissance Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C.

This Conference is co-organized by Asia Society and The College Board, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), STARTALK, the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), Oregon K-16 Flagship, Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA), Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLTA), National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL), Heritage Language Communities, and more.

What are the Expected Outcomes

You will hear U.S. and international, political, economic, and educational leaders share their visions, plans, and programs for Chinese language education in the global age.You will learn how to:

  • make the case for Chinese in your school and community;
  • bring meaningful Chinese language programs to all students;
  • model your program after best practices and research;
  • prepare or find qualified Chinese language teachers; and
  • obtain information, technical assistance, and resources.
Hot Off the Press - STARTALK 2008 is Accepting Proposals NOW!
The National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland is happy to announce the 2008 invitation for proposals. The STARTALK project will provide funding for summer programs in 2008 that fall into the following categories: 
  • Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Persian, and/or Urdu language study for middle and/or high school students;
  • Professional development opportunities for current or prospective teachers of these languages at levels kindergarten through undergraduate college.
All applications must be submitted via Email or postmarked by December 21, 2007.

STARTALK is part of a federal initiative to enhance the national capacity in critical need languages, including Chinese. The goal of this STARTALK program is to increase the number and expertise of students and teachers in those critical languages. For information about the National Security Language Initiative, click here. In the summer of 2007, 34 programs in 21 states and the District of Columbia were funded with an average award size of $100,000. To learn more about STARTALK 2007, click here
